What's New with EQUS:
EQUS launches
IT Outlook 2009 Series
The initial
round of in-depth interviews has been completed for our annual
IT Outlook EQUS Insights series report.
Twenty five
Fortune 500 CIOs have provided initial input. The study will be
augmented with a quantitative round in the fall. Some of the
highlights of the preliminary findings:
1.
IT
budgets for fiscal 2009 expected to be flat to a 10% decline for
most with some reporting as much as an anticipated 25% decline
due to current economic climate. IT departments will be "doing
more with less"
2.
Videoconferencing and items related to cutting travel expense
emerge as a bright spot
3.
Virtualization initiatives will continue to also be bright spots
due to quick payback ROIs in both power cost savings and IT
resource savings
4.
Rising
energy costs are creating interest in energy saving green
projects and initiatives
5.
Recycling IT projects are also experiencing a "demand pull" from
outside IT as organizations want their customers to know they
are doing their part
6.
Assistance with end-user training and deployment will continue
to be big asks from IT vendors
7.
IT also
needs additional support from vendors to help them make the case
internally for initiatives given the tough economic climate and
cutbacks. In many instances, management needs to be shown the
difference between spending and investing in the business

Al's Corner:
Summer business books!
I
have been feeling unusually business-like this summer and
vacation reading consisted of several business books along with
a whole pile of Louis L' Amours I picked up in great condition
at a used bookstore. I thought you might be interested in my top
favorites.
"Competing in a Flat World" Wharton School Publishing. A play on
the title of Thomas Friedman's bestseller, this book focuses on
the velocity of global commerce and the astounding possibilities
of agile, horizontal models based on technological innovation.
Gave me a lot of ideas for EQUS's current expansion
"The
Mind of the Strategist" Dr. Kenichi Omahae (Harvard Business
Review fame), a hard to find Penguin classic-great framework for
conceptualizing business problems-every business manager should
have this along with Peter Drucker's 'The Effective Executive'
as a desk reference.
"Adventures in the Screen Trade" by William Goldman is
fascinating even if you are not in the movie business.
And
my favorite L' Amour is still "Hondo"!
For
fun, I explored Central Coast wineries around Santa Barbara.
I'm planning to take a couple days to explore Washington state
wineries in August.-Any great wineries I should check out,
please let me know.
